Is Blu-ray dying?

February 16, 2010 on 2:38 pm | In Netflix | No Comments

I had four older movies in my Netflix queue waiting for blu-ray releases. I was notified today that they were converted to DVD formats. Which I assume means that any plan to release these movies in blu-ray format has been killed.

* Sixteen Candles
* Taxi Driver
* The Breakfast Club
* Zathura

I also noticed that the yet to be released movie Bandslam is not going to be released in blu-ray. It too was changed to DVD format.

I really love blu-ray movies. Given the choice between DVD and blu-ray I’ll always choose blu-ray. Given the choice between DVD now and waiting for blu-ray, I’ll wait. I hope the format doesn’t die, but it’s looking like it might.

Netflix tip – How to get new releases every single time!

July 31, 2006 on 4:34 pm | In Netflix | No Comments

I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for years now and I’ve discovered some tips to get the most out of the service. As other subscribers know, it’s generally a very long wait to get the hot new releases. I once waited over six months to get the “40 Year Old Virgin.” But I found a way to get the these new DVDs everytime.

The key is understanding that while new DVDs are released on tuesdays, Netflix actually ships them out on the previous monday. Thus, if you send in as many movies as you can on friday (or saturday, depending how close you are to the return center) you’ll almost certainly be in front to get that hot new release.

I’ve been using this technique for about a year now and it’s worked every single time.
